What Is a Sushi Burrito? A Ninja's Honest Explainer

We get this question at the counter probably four times a day. Someone walks into the Dojo, stares at the menu board, and goes: "Wait... so what is a sushi burrito exactly?"

Fair question. Let's fix that.

The Short Answer

A sushi burrito is exactly what it sounds like. Take everything you'd normally find inside a sushi roll — rice, seaweed, protein, veggies, sauces — and instead of slicing it into eight tiny pieces, you roll it into one giant handheld burrito. No chopsticks. No soy sauce dish. Just you and a two-hand commitment.

Think of it as a sushi roll that skipped the plate and went straight to your face. That's it. That's the whole concept.

How It's Actually Built

At our Dojos, it goes down assembly-line style, kind of like a certain burrito place — except we're torching salmon and drizzling house sauces instead of scooping guac.

  • The wrap: Full-size nori sheet (or a soy wrap if you want it milder)
  • The base: Sushi rice, brown rice, or go rice-free if you're doing that
  • Protein: Torched salmon, spicy tuna, chicken, steak, shrimp tempura, tofu — your call
  • Toppings: Cucumber, avocado, seaweed salad, kimchi, crunchy tempura flakes, jalapeños
  • Sauces: This is where people go wrong. Two sauces max. Trust us.

Sushi Burrito vs. Regular Sushi Roll

Honestly? The biggest difference is portion and pace. A standard roll is 6-8 pieces meant to be shared or paired with other stuff. A sushi burrito is a full meal in one object.

It's also way less precious. You can eat it walking to class. You can eat it in your car (we've all done it, no shame). You can eat it at 1:30am at the UCF Dojo because we're open till 2am at select locations and that's just how Orlando works.

Does It Taste Different?

Kind of, yeah. Because you're getting every ingredient in every bite instead of a delicate little slice, the flavors hit harder. Spicy stuff is spicier. Crunchy stuff is crunchier. It's sushi with the volume turned up.

What to Order First

If it's your first time, don't overthink it. Here's what we push:

  • Fry Me a River Burrito — shrimp tempura, crunch, absolutely no notes
  • Cheet Day Burrito 🌶 — the one that goes viral for a reason
  • Steak Mac & Cheese Crunch Burrito — yes, mac and cheese in a sushi burrito. Yes, it works. I will fight about this.
  • Create Your Own — if you already know what you like, just build it

Two Rookie Mistakes

One: over-sauce. Four sauces sounds fun but it turns into soup. Two: skipping the crunch. Tempura flakes are non-negotiable — texture is half the point of a burrito.

So, Worth It?

Look, we've been doing build-your-own sushi since 2011, back before anyone knew what is a sushi burrito even meant. Bowls and burritos became our top sellers almost immediately and they never gave the crown back. That says something.

Come through any of our seven Dojos — UCF, Lake Nona, Altamonte, Millenia, Colonial, Chickasaw, or Tampa near USF — and build one. Or order ahead online and skip the line. Download the rewards app while you're at it, because free food is free food.
