What's Actually In a Mac and Cheese Sushi Burrito?

So you saw a video. Someone cut into a giant sushi burrito and mac and cheese came pouring out and you thought, wait — is that real food or is that just internet bait?

It's real. We make them. And people order them so often we had to give the category its own section on the menu.

Okay, So What Is It Actually?

A mac and cheese sushi burrito is exactly what it sounds like, which is the confusing part. Take a full sheet of seaweed, layer on sushi rice, add your protein, then pack in mac and cheese. Roll it up burrito-style — no cutting, no chopsticks, just hands.

The "Crunch" part of ours comes from the texture layer. Crispy bits against creamy mac against warm rice. That contrast is the whole point. Without it you've just got a soft roll and honestly, that's a lot less fun to eat.

Ours come in three main versions:

  • Steak Mac & Cheese Crunch Burrito — flame-torched steak, the safest bet if it's your first one
  • Spicy Steak Mac & Cheese Crunch Burrito — same thing but it fights back a little
  • Chicken Mac & Cheese Crunch Burrito — lighter, and the one I personally reach for on a work shift

Burrito or Bowl? Here's How to Decide

We get this question constantly. Both exist, both are good, but they're different experiences.

Go burrito if you're eating with your hands, walking somewhere, or driving. It holds together way better than people expect.

Go bowl if you want to see everything and mix it up. The Tempura Mac Bowl is underrated and I will defend that opinion. Also the Spicy Krab and Chicken Mac Bowl if you want two proteins doing their thing, or the Steak Mac Bowl if you're keeping it simple.

A Few Ordering Tips We Actually Use

  • Don't over-sauce it. The mac already brings creaminess. Pick one house sauce, not four. Ninjas will tell you the same thing.
  • Eat it fresh. A mac and cheese sushi burrito is not a leftovers item. Twenty minutes is your window.
  • Add a crunchy topping if you're building your own. Texture is what separates a good one from a great one.
  • Grab an app to split. Krab Rangoons or Buffalo Goons. You'll thank us.

Why This Even Exists

We've been doing build-your-own sushi since August 29, 2011 — first Dojo right across from UCF. Rice, seaweed, protein, sauce, roll it up. Once you've got that system down, adding mac and cheese isn't that wild of a jump.

Turns out the weird ideas are usually the good ones. Bowls and burritos became our top sellers, not rolls. We didn't plan that either.

Where to Get One

All seven Dojos have them — UCF, Altamonte Springs, Lake Nona, Millenia, Colonial, Chickasaw, and Tampa near USF. Select locations stay open until 2AM, which is when the mac and cheese sushi burrito really finds its audience. No judgment.

Order ahead online, or download the rewards app so you're at least getting points for this habit. See you at the Dojo. 🥷
