Sushi Bowl vs Poke Bowl Difference: A Ninja Explains
· By the Sus Hi Team
We hear this question at the counter probably ten times a shift. Someone's standing in front of the menu board at the UCF Dojo, eyes darting between the Sushi Bowls section and the Poke Bowls section, and they finally go: "...okay, what's the actual difference?"
Fair question. So let's settle it.
The short answer: it's all about the fish
The main sushi bowl vs poke bowl difference comes down to what protein you can put in it and how it's treated. A poke bowl is traditionally raw — cubed raw fish, tossed in sauce, Hawaiian in origin. Poke literally means "to cut into chunks" in Hawaiian. That's the whole vibe.
A sushi bowl is basically a deconstructed sushi roll in a bowl. Rice on the bottom, whatever you want on top. Raw fish? Sure. Flame-torched chicken? Also yes. Krab, steak, shrimp tempura, tofu? All fair game.
So: poke = raw fish focused. Sushi bowl = anything goes.
Why our bowls outsell literally everything
Funny story — when we opened in 2011, we thought rolls would be the star. Bowls and burritos took over almost immediately. Turns out people want sushi flavors without waiting on a roll to get sliced.
Our Create Your Own Sushi Bowl comes in Small, Regular, or Large, and you pick your base, protein, toppings, and sauce. If you want us to decide for you, the Party in My Mouth Bowl is honestly underrated — I'd put it up against anything on the menu. The Boom Boom Shrimp Bowl also goes hard.
On the poke side, we keep it more traditional. All Mighty Poke Bowl, Master Ro Poke Bowl, Two Punch Poke Bowl — all raw, all clean, all fish-forward. Or build your own poke if you've got opinions (we respect that).
How to pick between them
- Want raw fish and clean flavors? Poke bowl. Every time.
- Not into raw fish? Sushi bowl. Grab flame-torched chicken or steak and you're golden.
- Want maximum sauce chaos? Sushi bowl. Our house sauces were built for this.
- Feeding a picky group? Sushi bowls, because everyone gets to customize their own.
- Vegan? The Hi-Ya! Waska Bowl. No thinking required.
One more thing people mix up
Another piece of the sushi bowl vs poke bowl difference nobody talks about: texture. Poke is soft, cool, uniform. Sushi bowls get crunchy — tempura flakes, cucumber, fried onions, spicy krab, whatever you pile on. If you're a texture person, you already know which team you're on.
And if you can't choose? That's genuinely fine. Half of our regulars rotate. Poke on Monday, then a Mac & Cheese Crunch Burrito on Thursday because sometimes you just need mac and cheese wrapped in seaweed. (No, that's not a poke bowl. It's not a sushi bowl either. It's its own thing and it rules.)
Come settle it yourself
