How to Build a High Protein Sushi Bowl (Ninja Approved)

We get this question a lot at the register. Usually from someone who just left the gym, still has a shaker bottle in hand, and wants to know if sushi can actually be a protein meal.

Short answer? Yes. But only if you build it right.

Because here's the thing — a lot of sushi ends up being mostly rice. Delicious rice! But rice. If you're chasing protein, you've gotta be a little intentional about it. So let's break down how we'd stack a high protein sushi bowl if we were standing in line behind you.

Step 1: Rethink Your Base (This Is Where Most People Lose)

Rice isn't the enemy. But if protein is the goal, cutting your base in half changes everything — half rice, half greens, or straight up all salad base. You free up a ton of room in the bowl for the stuff that actually matters.

My personal move: half sushi rice, half spring mix. You still get that vinegared rice flavor, you still get texture, and now there's real estate for double protein.

Step 2: Double Protein. Always.

Seriously. Just do it. One scoop is a meal, two scoops is a meal meal.

Our best picks when you want maximum protein per bite:

  • Flame-torched steak — dense, filling, and the char is unreal
  • Grilled chicken — the boring-in-a-good-way workhorse
  • Raw salmon or tuna — lean, clean, high protein, low mess
  • Tofu — our plant-based ninjas, this one's for you
  • Shrimp — light but stacks up fast when you double it

Where people go wrong: loading up on tempura-everything and krab salad and then wondering why it didn't hit like a protein meal. Tempura shrimp is amazing (the Boom Boom Shrimp Bowl exists for a reason), it's just not the play if macros are the mission.

The Combo We'd Order

Regular bowl, half rice half greens, double flame-torched steak, edamame, cucumber, avocado, seaweed salad, light spicy mayo, heavy ponzu. That's a high protein sushi bowl that doesn't taste like a diet. And if you want off-menu inspiration, the Crazy Rich Salmon Bowl is already halfway there — just ask for extra salmon and go lighter on the base.

Step 3: Watch the Sauce, Not the Fun

You don't have to go sauce-free. That's miserable and nobody's doing that. But there's a difference between a drizzle and a swimming pool.

Ponzu, our sweet soy, and eel sauce go a long way with less. Creamy sauces? Ask for light. Add a side of edamame instead — more protein, same satisfaction.

Why Bowls Beat Rolls for This

Rolls are portioned for you. Bowls are portioned by you. That's the whole reason bowls became our #1 seller from basically day one back in 2011 — you control the ratio. Build-your-own means build-your-own macros, whether that's a 6am gym bro or a 1am study session at the UCF Dojo (yeah, we're open till 2am at select spots).

Fun fact from behind the counter: the double-protein-half-rice order is way more common than you'd think. You're not being weird. You're being smart.

Come build one. Order ahead on the app so it's ready when you walk in, rack up rewards points while you're at it, and tag us if your bowl looks stupid good. #SusHi #SushiBowl
