What's Actually In the Lava Burst Roll? Let's Talk
· By the Sus Hi Team
We get this question at the counter all the time. Somebody's staring at the menu board, pointing at the roll with the little chili pepper next to it, and they go: "okay but what's actually in that one?"
Fair question. So let's break it down properly.
First things first — it's a cooked roll
This matters more than people think. The Lava Burst Roll isn't a raw fish roll, which puts it in a totally different lane than our Sus Hi Roll or the Spicy Philly Roll (both raw, both great, both not for everybody).
So if you're the person who wants the full sushi experience but your stomach does a little flip when you hear "raw tuna," this is your roll. I've handed it to first-timers at the UCF Dojo more times than I can count and watched them go from skeptical to ordering it again next week.
Okay, but how spicy is spicy?
It's got the 🌶 on the menu for a reason. But here's my honest take — it's warm, not punishing. It's the kind of heat that builds a little on the back end and makes you want another bite, not the kind that has you chugging water and regretting your life choices.
If you've eaten spicy mayo on anything, ever, you'll be totally fine here. And if you're a heat chaser? You might actually want to go bigger — the Lit Bowl or the Cheet Day Burrito are more your speed.
How to order it like you know what you're doing
A few things we've picked up from watching thousands of these go out the window:
- Pair it with something crunchy. Krab Rangoons or Crispy Tuna Tots next to a Lava Burst Roll is a genuinely perfect combo. Texture contrast is underrated.
- Don't drown it in extra sauce. The roll already has its own thing going on. Adding four more sauces is how you lose the flavor you came for.
- Get Miso Soup if it's a cold-ish Florida night. Sounds basic. It's not. It resets your palate between pieces.
- Order it with a bowl if you're splitting. A roll plus a Create Your Own Bowl is a solid two-person move.
Roll vs. bowl vs. burrito — which one should you get?
Honestly, this comes down to how you want to eat. A roll is for sharing, picking at, pairing with apps. A burrito is for eating with one hand while you drive (we see you). A bowl is for when you want the most food for your effort.
Bowls are actually our number one seller, which surprised Robert and Teresa when we first opened back in 2011 — they thought rolls would run the show. But the Lava Burst Roll holds its own against anything on that menu. It's got a real following.
Where to grab one
All seven Dojos have it — the original by UCF, Altamonte Springs, Lake Nona, Millenia, Colonial, Chickasaw, and our Tampa spot near USF. Some of our Dojos stay open until 2am, which is extremely relevant information if you're the kind of person who gets sushi cravings at midnight.
Order ahead online or through the rewards app so it's ready when you walk in. Or just come stand at the counter and ask a ninja what they'd get. We'll tell you the truth. #SusHi #NinjaSushi
