The Best Sushi Rolls to Try (If You're New or Just Stuck)
· By the Sus Hi Team
We get this question probably fifteen times a shift. Someone walks into the Dojo, stares at the menu board for a solid minute, and goes: "Okay... what should I get?"
Fair. There's a lot happening up there. So let's actually break it down.
First, Figure Out Where You Land on the Raw Fish Scale
Honestly, this is the whole game. Most people who think they don't like sushi have just never had a cooked roll, and cooked rolls are half our menu.
So before you pick, ask yourself: are you a never-raw person, a maybe-raw person, or a bring-me-the-salmon person? Everything gets easier after that.
Never-Raw? Start Here.
- Shrimp Tempura Roll — Crunchy, warm, zero intimidation. This is the roll we hand to someone's skeptical roommate and watch them convert in real time.
- Chik-Roll-A Roll — Chicken. In a sushi roll. It sounds like a dare and it's genuinely one of our sleeper hits.
- Cali Roll — The classic. Krab, avocado, cucumber. You already know what it tastes like and that's kind of the point.
- Livin' on the Veg — Vegan and not sad about it. Actually holds up on its own.
Ready to Level Up (But Gently)
The Lava Burst Roll is where I send people who want heat without committing to raw fish. It's spicy, it's got that torched thing going on, and it hits different at 11pm.
And the Holy Krab! Hand Roll — hand rolls are underrated in general. You get way more nori-to-filling ratio and you eat it with your hands like a taco. Nobody talks about this enough.
Full Send: The Raw Ones
- Sus Hi Roll — It's got our name on it for a reason. Spicy, raw, and the one we'd order on our day off.
- Spicy Philly Roll — Cream cheese and raw fish is a combo people fight about online. We're on the pro side.
- Spicy Tuna Hand Roll — Simple, clean, three ingredients doing exactly what they should.
The Move Nobody Tells You About
Build your own. Seriously. We've been doing build-your-own since 2011 — before it was everywhere — and the Create Your Own Roll is where you stop guessing and start actually learning what you like.
Pro tip from behind the counter: don't overload it. Two proteins max, one crunch, one sauce. Rolls with eight things in them fall apart and taste like nothing. Restraint is a flex.
Two Small Things That Make a Big Difference
One — order a roll and an app. Krab Rangoons or Buffalo Goons. A roll alone is a snack, not a meal, and we'd rather you leave full.
Two — if you're deciding between the best sushi rolls to try and you genuinely can't pick, get a hand roll plus a bowl. Our bowls outsell everything, and there's a reason.
Also, some Dojos are open till 2am. Which is dangerous information but you deserve to have it.
Come through — UCF, Lake Nona, Chickasaw, Millenia, Colonial, Altamonte, or Tampa. Tell the Ninja behind the counter you're new and they'll point you the right way. Or just order online and skip the line. We won't judge either way.
